Criminal Legal Aid Lawyer in Mississauga
Aftermath Law accepts Legal Aid Ontario certificates for criminal matters and offers a free initial consultation whether you have a certificate or are still applying. Explain what needs attention now
Tell the firm whether police have asked to speak with you, you have been charged, you are in custody or you have been released with conditions. Give the next known court date or hearing information and distinguish what has been confirmed from what you have been told to expect. You can request the free consultation before LAO has decided your application. The first discussion can identify the legal issue, options and possible representation; it does not guarantee funding, immediate action or attendance. For an urgent custody or bail concern, mention that at the start. Dildeep Sahi offers urgent telephone assistance 24/7, separately from scheduled consultations, but an immediate answer or response is not guaranteed.
Put the charge papers and certificate wording side by side
If you have a certificate, keep the complete document and any later LAO correspondence available with the actual charge papers. Identify the charges or work named in it and the step you now need help with. Flag a new charge, a separate file or a bail issue rather than assuming the existing wording covers it. If you are still applying or have received a decision you do not understand, explain that status accurately. LAO determines eligibility and authorization; Aftermath Law does not issue certificates. The consultation can identify questions about scope without treating the firm’s criminal practice as proof that LAO funds every requested service.
Identify what has already been done and who is acting
Explain whether a lawyer currently represents you, whether duty counsel has assisted at an appearance and what instructions you received afterwards. Keep relevant endorsements and correspondence so the next step can be understood. Assistance on a court date is different from an ongoing certificate retainer, and an enquiry to Aftermath Law does not replace another lawyer or confirm a change of representation. Tell the firm which task remains unresolved, such as reviewing disclosure or preparing for an upcoming event. Any question about existing counsel or further authorization should be clarified before you assume new arrangements are in place.
Prepare a focused question for the consultation
Bring together the three points you want the appointment to resolve: the immediate criminal-law issue, what the LAO papers appear to authorize and the work you are asking this firm to consider. For example, identify the current condition causing difficulty or the next court event, rather than sending an unorganized disclosure file through the enquiry form. Keep complete documents and original records available, and arrange detailed review directly. LAO may need financial information for its own assessment; a brief enquiry to the firm does not submit an LAO application or establish eligibility.
Keep current obligations in view while representation is discussed
Continue to follow the release conditions and court instructions that apply to your case. Use the actual papers and later directions to confirm the court, date and event; living in Mississauga does not choose the venue or attendance method. Waiting for a certificate or a reply from a lawyer does not itself excuse an appearance. If you are unrepresented and a date is approaching, the core guide links LAO’s current duty-counsel and contact guidance. Duty counsel assistance and the firm agreeing to handle your case are separate arrangements, so be clear about what has actually been confirmed.
Confirm the agreed work at the Mississauga office
Aftermath Law’s office is at 250 Dundas Street West, Suite 402, Mississauga, ON L5B 1J2, with visits by appointment only. Consultations with Dildeep Sahi are available in English, Punjabi and Hindi. The free initial discussion covers your situation, options and potential representation. The firm must review the matter and certificate where applicable, complete conflict checks, consider availability and agree to act. Detailed disclosure review, advice, negotiations and court attendance need an expressly agreed scope of work. Before relying on an arrangement, clarify which matter and next step the firm has accepted; a consultation booking or issued certificate alone is not confirmation of representation.
Preparing for the first conversation
- Identify the actual charge or police request, custody or release status and next known court event.
- Keep charge papers, the certificate or application decision and later LAO correspondence together; flag unclear scope.
- Explain any existing lawyer or duty-counsel assistance and the work or instruction that remains outstanding.
- Use a brief enquiry to identify the decision needing advice, then arrange detailed records review and confirm the work accepted.
Keep the initial website enquiry brief. Do not upload or send sensitive documents through the form; arrange any document review directly with the firm.
You do not need every item before getting in touch. Mention any approaching court or response date.
Common questions
Do I need an approved certificate before requesting a consultation?
No. You may request the free initial consultation while applying or before you have a certificate. LAO decides eligibility and coverage separately; the consultation does not guarantee funding or that the firm will take the case.
Does my certificate cover a new charge or every court step?
Do not assume that it does. Compare the actual charge papers and requested work with the certificate and any later authorization. Ask LAO about coverage and tell the firm what has been issued so the scope can be clarified.
Does assistance from duty counsel mean Aftermath Law is my lawyer?
No. Duty counsel assistance and retaining this firm are separate. Explain who has helped, whether another lawyer acts and what remains to be done. Aftermath Law must complete its checks and expressly agree to representation.
Should I send my full disclosure or financial records through the enquiry form?
No. Keep the initial message brief, identifying the issue, certificate status and next known date. Arrange detailed document review directly with the firm, and follow LAO’s instructions for information it needs for your application.
Will the firm attend my next court date because I booked the free consultation?
Only if representation and attendance have been expressly agreed. A booking, certificate or unanswered enquiry does not confirm attendance or suspend existing obligations. Tell the firm the date and follow the court’s current instructions while arrangements are discussed.
