Punjabi Assault Lawyer in Mississauga
An assault charge can be difficult to explain when the conversation, the police summary and your own account use different languages. Dildeep Sahi offers Punjabi consultations for Mississauga clients facing assault allegations. The initial discussion can identify the alleged conduct, immediate restrictions and questions about potential representation without requiring you to turn your account into an English legal statement first.

Punjabi consultations and court interpretation
Dildeep Sahi provides consultations in Punjabi, English and Hindi. Tell the firm which language you prefer when arranging the appointment. Speaking Punjabi with your lawyer does not make Punjabi the language of the court proceeding or book a court interpreter.
For an Ontario Court of Justice criminal appearance, contact the courthouse before your court date to request an interpreter, or tell the judge or justice of the peace at the appearance. That court provides interpreters without charge. Confirm arrangements separately from your Punjabi consultation. Documents or evidence in another language may require a separate translation; confirm what is needed before paying for one.
Understand the alleged force, gesture or threat
Assault is not limited to a punch or an injury. Section 265 of the Criminal Code includes intentionally applying force without consent and certain attempts or threats made by an act or gesture where the person has present ability or causes the other person reasonably to believe they have it. Identify what police allege you did, not only the word assault on the paperwork. A verbal dispute, an accidental collision and intentional physical contact raise different questions. The charge is an allegation; the evidence and the legal elements must still be assessed.
Explain the encounter in the language you used
Describe where each person was, what was said and when any physical contact occurred. If people switched between Punjabi and English, identify the original words and who supplied any translation recorded by police. Preserve messages, voice notes or video in their existing form, with your explanation separately. A short English paraphrase can omit context. Counsel can assess whether an evidentiary translation or further records are needed; a consultation does not automatically translate the Crown disclosure.
Review self-defence without assuming a fight decides it
If you say you acted to protect yourself or another person, explain the perceived threat and your response in sequence. Under section 34, the assessment includes a belief on reasonable grounds about force or a threat of force, a defensive purpose and whether the response was reasonable in the circumstances. Being frightened or saying that the other person started the encounter does not settle all those questions. Counsel needs the surrounding accounts and available recordings before advising.
Keep Mississauga daily arrangements within release terms
An undertaking or release order may affect a home, jobsite or person you normally see. Read the precise people, addresses and exceptions listed. If a restriction interferes with work or collecting belongings, describe the difficulty to counsel rather than returning or sending a message contrary to the terms. Existing conditions apply until lawfully changed. A Punjabi explanation should help you understand the obligation and identify a practical proposal; it does not authorize an exception.
Assess the case before deciding on a resolution
If retained, counsel can compare your account with disclosure, assess missing evidence and discuss resolution or trial preparation. Simple assault under section 266 can proceed by indictment or summary conviction; the indictable maximum is five years of imprisonment. That maximum is not a prediction of sentence. The precise charge, evidence, circumstances and available sentencing options require individual advice. Ask about any personal concern before accepting a proposal, rather than relying on a friend’s result.
Arrange Punjabi advice and court language support separately
Aftermath Law’s Mississauga office visits are by appointment. Identify the next appearance date and the court on your papers when requesting a free initial consultation about your situation, options and potential representation. Document review and further work are arranged separately. If you need court interpretation, raise it with counsel and the assigned courthouse early; speaking Punjabi during a private consultation does not arrange an interpreter or change court attendance directions.
Preparing for the first conversation
- Keep the charge papers, current release terms and any later court directions together.
- Preserve full messages or recordings and identify which language was used at each relevant point.
- Write a private sequence of the alleged contact, including what you know directly and what someone else told you.
- List restrictions affecting home or work, the next court date and questions you want explained in Punjabi.
Keep the initial website enquiry brief. Do not upload or send sensitive documents through the form; arrange any document review directly with the firm.
You do not need every item before getting in touch. Mention any approaching court or response date.
Common questions
Can I face an assault charge when there is no visible injury?
Yes. An injury is not required for every form of assault. The allegation may concern intentional force without consent or a qualifying attempt or threat by an act or gesture. Counsel should review which conduct is actually alleged.
Should I rewrite my Punjabi messages in English before the consultation?
Keep the originals and surrounding conversation. You may explain your understanding in Punjabi, but identify any separate translation rather than substituting it for the original. Counsel can assess what language or evidentiary work is necessary.
Does requesting a free consultation mean a lawyer will attend my next court date?
No. The initial consultation concerns your situation, options and potential representation. Representation, document work and attendance must be agreed separately, following conflict checks and confirmation of the retainer. Continue following your current court directions.
Can a relative ask the complainant to resolve the case for me?
Do not arrange direct or indirect contact contrary to a condition. A private discussion does not itself end a prosecution or remove restrictions. Give counsel the relevant information and ask about the appropriate lawful channel.
