Start with the exact drug allegation
Possession, trafficking, possession for the purpose of trafficking, production and importing raise different legal questions. Keep the precise charge wording and alleged substance available rather than relying on a general description of the incident. Where a vehicle, home or package was searched, preserve the charge papers and any warrant or seizure documents you received. Note who had access and what records may help explain the circumstances. The Ontario drug-offence guide explains the legal distinctions and evidence issues in more detail.
Match the Brampton appearance to your court papers
If your papers identify the Brampton Ontario Court of Justice, use its official location page to find the current instructions for the particular event. It lists federal first-appearance and case-management information, alongside other criminal categories. Check the court level, date, event and whether you have retained counsel before using a schedule or connection link. A Brampton home address does not decide the venue, and an initial appearance is not necessarily a trial. Keep later court directions with the original notice.
Find the right prosecution and disclosure contact
The Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC) prosecutes Controlled Drugs and Substances Act offences in Ontario. Brampton’s Ontario Court of Justice page lists PPSC and provincial Crown contacts separately. Check the prosecuting office on your documents rather than choosing a contact from the police service that investigated. If you have retained a lawyer for the case, ask them to obtain and review disclosure. If you are unrepresented, confirm the appropriate office and its current instructions. Requesting disclosure does not excuse a required court appearance.
Prepare questions for the disclosure review
Disclosure is the case material the prosecution provides, which may include police notes, statements and recordings. Make a short inventory of the material received and a separate list of records mentioned but not supplied. Questions may concern the search, where an item was found, access to a vehicle or premises, substance testing, or the context of messages and recordings. Preserve original records you can lawfully access, without editing them or contacting someone contrary to release conditions. Identify any condition affecting work, housing or travel, and continue following it unless lawfully changed. Counsel can compare the allegation with the available evidence and identify further information needed before advising about the defence, a possible resolution or trial.
Arrange a consultation from our Mississauga office
Aftermath Law serves Brampton from its office at 250 Dundas Street West, Suite 402, Mississauga. Office visits are by appointment. When requesting a free consultation, identify the charge, the next court date and any condition or practical concern that needs attention. Say whether another lawyer already represents you. Keep the initial website enquiry brief and arrange document review directly with the firm. The firm must complete a conflict check and agree to the scope of representation; requesting a consultation does not mean a lawyer is booked to attend court for you.
Preparing for the first conversation
- Have the exact charge, alleged substance, court level, file number and next appearance details available.
- Keep every release document and later order, together with any search-warrant or seizure paperwork received.
- List the disclosure received, material still missing and questions about the search or alleged possession.
- Identify time-sensitive original records without editing them or contacting anyone contrary to a condition.
- Mention an approaching date and any Legal Aid Ontario certificate when requesting the consultation; arrange document review directly.
Keep the initial website enquiry brief. Do not upload or send sensitive documents through the form; arrange any document review directly with the firm.
You do not need every item before getting in touch. Mention any approaching court or response date.
Common questions
Does a Brampton drug charge use the same Crown contact as every other criminal case?
Do not assume so. The PPSC prosecutes Controlled Drugs and Substances Act offences in Ontario, and the Brampton Ontario Court of Justice page lists federal and provincial prosecution contacts separately. Use the actual case documents and current official instructions to identify the appropriate contact.
Should I wait for complete disclosure before contacting a lawyer?
You can seek advice before all disclosure arrives. An approaching appearance, release condition or time-sensitive record may need attention first. Tell the firm what you have received and what is missing; a full assessment of the allegation will depend on the evidence available.
Does Aftermath Law have a Brampton office?
No. The firm serves Brampton from its Mississauga office, where visits are by appointment. Confirm consultation arrangements directly. A meeting with the firm is separate from a court appearance, and representation must be expressly agreed.
Can I discuss a Legal Aid Ontario certificate for a drug charge?
Yes. Aftermath Law accepts criminal law certificates. Legal Aid Ontario decides eligibility and the work a certificate covers. The firm must review the matter and certificate, complete a conflict check and agree to act; a certificate alone does not establish representation.
