Punjabi consultations and court interpretation
Dildeep Sahi provides consultations in Punjabi, English and Hindi. Tell the firm which language you prefer when arranging the appointment. Speaking Punjabi with your lawyer does not make Punjabi the language of the court proceeding or book a court interpreter.
For an Ontario Court of Justice criminal appearance, contact the courthouse before your court date to request an interpreter, or tell the judge or justice of the peace at the appearance. That court provides interpreters without charge. Confirm arrangements separately from your Punjabi consultation. Documents or evidence in another language may require a separate translation; confirm what is needed before paying for one.
Read the count before drawing conclusions from a gun label
Identify the item, alleged conduct and section in each charge. A count concerning unauthorized possession raises different requirements from careless handling or storage. Another provision addresses a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, or such an unloaded firearm with readily accessible suitable ammunition, without the required authorization and registration, subject to statutory exceptions. Do not treat every seized object or every ammunition allegation as that particular offence. Ask for the precise allegation and terminology to be explained in Punjabi using the actual papers.
Explain access, knowledge and your role in the place
Where an item was seized from a shared home or vehicle, describe who used the place, your access and what you knew about the item. Do not substitute a statement about ownership for the full account. Statutory possession can extend beyond physically holding an object, and the prosecution’s alleged connection to you needs assessment against the evidence. Explain these details privately in Punjabi while identifying which facts you observed personally. Do not contact an occupant, witness or another accused person contrary to current conditions.
Check the source of a disputed item description
Separate the police narrative, seizure receipt, photographs and any technical report. Identify which record uses the description you dispute and whether the material refers to the same item throughout. Tell counsel about an uncertain identification or a Punjabi word that has been rendered differently in a summary. Preserve the original material rather than supplying a corrected replacement. A private explanation is not a technical classification or formal evidentiary translation; counsel can determine what further review is required.
Bring search and statement concerns into the defence review
Describe the search sequence, any papers received, the questions asked and the language used. Note whether you asked for legal advice and which caution or instruction you did not understand. Counsel can assess search, seizure and access-to-counsel issues in the actual circumstances, alongside the evidence connecting you to the item and the authorization records. A language concern or disputed search does not automatically remove the evidence or end the prosecution. Keep original recordings or messages lawfully available and arrange private review separately.
Understand current restrictions before discussing a response
Keep release terms and any existing weapons prohibition with the charge papers. Tell counsel about restrictions affecting your residence, work or access to property; do not try to solve them by moving a firearm or ammunition yourself. Depending on the offence and circumstances, a conviction may involve imprisonment and a weapons prohibition. Understand any proposed plea or resolution and its effect before giving instructions in the language you prefer. Neither an informal understanding nor a consultation request changes a current order.
Confirm the court event and Punjabi consultation separately
Your latest papers identify the court level and event; service to Brampton does not mean every allegation follows the same attendance listing. If the Brampton Ontario Court of Justice is assigned, check its current information for that event. Punjabi consultations with Dildeep Sahi are arranged through the appointment-only Mississauga office and can address your situation, options and potential representation. Further review and attendance require agreement. Court interpretation and document translation are separate questions, which should be raised with counsel and the assigned court.
Preparing for the first conversation
- List each charge and the item or conduct it concerns.
- Describe your connection to the relevant place and what you knew about the item.
- Keep original seizure descriptions, photographs and reports separate from your notes.
- Identify search or interview passages needing explanation in Punjabi.
- Have current restrictions, authorization records and the next court directions available.
Keep the initial website enquiry brief. Do not upload or send sensitive documents through the form; arrange any document review directly with the firm.
You do not need every item before getting in touch. Mention any approaching court or response date.
Common questions
Does an item found in a vehicle make every occupant guilty?
Do not assume that result. Counsel needs the alleged connection, knowledge, access and other evidence to assess the actual possession or other count. An allegation and a finding of guilt are different.
Can I replace a police summary with my own Punjabi explanation?
Keep the original summary and explain separately which passages you dispute. Your account can guide the review, but it should not replace original evidence or be treated as a formal translation or technical report.
Can the lawyer promise there will be no weapons prohibition?
No. The applicable rules depend on the particular offence and circumstances. Counsel must review the charge, relevant history and any proposed outcome before advising about potential consequences.
Will my Punjabi-speaking lawyer also be the court interpreter?
Do not assume that arrangement. Punjabi legal advice and court interpretation have different roles. Raise any interpreter need with counsel and the court handling the appearance, separately from booking a consultation.
