Punjabi consultations and court interpretation

Dildeep Sahi provides consultations in Punjabi, English and Hindi. Tell the firm which language you prefer when arranging the appointment. Speaking Punjabi with your lawyer does not make Punjabi the language of the court proceeding or book a court interpreter.

For an Ontario Court of Justice criminal appearance, contact the courthouse before your court date to request an interpreter, or tell the judge or justice of the peace at the appearance. That court provides interpreters without charge. Confirm arrangements separately from your Punjabi consultation. Documents or evidence in another language may require a separate translation; confirm what is needed before paying for one.

Identify whether the allegation concerns possession or trafficking

A charge of simple possession is different from trafficking or possessing a substance for the purpose of trafficking. Trafficking is not limited to a completed sale for money: the statutory definition includes forms of giving, transferring and offering, subject to the legislation. Identify what act police attribute to you and the substance involved. Your account should explain the particular exchange or role rather than assume that the absence of a payment settles the charge. Counsel must assess the precise allegation against the complete record.

Keep Punjabi messages, translations and summaries separate

Preserve complete original message threads lawfully available to you, including dates, sender details and any voice notes. Identify which passages are Punjabi, English or a mixture, and who prepared any English version in the disclosure. Explain the context of an ambiguous word to counsel without editing the source or asking a participant to rewrite it. Your private explanation is not automatically a formal evidentiary translation. Counsel can assess the language question alongside authorship, context and the other evidence instead of treating a selected translated phrase as the whole exchange.

Connect the alleged activity to the actual evidence

Identify the records relating to the events police describe and discuss your recollection privately with defence counsel. Ask counsel whether a written chronology would assist and how to prepare it. Disclosure may include observations, messages, seized-item descriptions or analysis documents. Point out an absent attachment, an uncertain identity or a passage inconsistent with your recollection, and keep the original files unchanged. These are issues for review, not proof that the prosecution must fail. Discuss the proposed evidence and any search-related concern privately in Punjabi; do not seek explanations from somebody you are prohibited from contacting.

Understand the defence process and potential consequences

Counsel may need to assess the substance identification, the alleged conduct, possession questions, the search and any statements before discussing a resolution or trial. Imprisonment can be a consequence, and the applicable penalties differ by the offence and substance. A trafficking allegation should not be treated as an automatic personal-use diversion case. Ask what the prosecution’s proposal requires, what consequences need individual advice and what records remain outstanding. A clear Punjabi discussion should support informed instructions rather than promise a particular result.

Check the assigned Brampton event and current restrictions

Use the court level, file number and latest attendance directions on your own papers. If the case is assigned to the Brampton Ontario Court of Justice, its official page distinguishes different court events and listings; a general virtual listing is not a direction for every proceeding. Follow current release terms, including any limits on contact, locations or substances, unless lawfully changed. Identify practical conflicts for counsel before acting. A Punjabi consultation does not cancel the event, alter conditions or confirm that counsel will appear.

Confirm private language assistance and representation

Dildeep Sahi offers consultations in Punjabi, English and Hindi from the appointment-only Mississauga office. Tell the firm if another lawyer acts, which record needs explanation and when the next decision is due. The free initial discussion concerns your situation, options and potential representation; further review and representation require agreement. Aftermath Law accepts criminal Legal Aid Ontario certificates, but eligibility, coverage and the firm’s accepted retainer are separate questions. Court interpretation and evidence translation must also be addressed separately from your preferred consultation language.

Preparing for the first conversation

  • Identify the particular act, substance and charge police allege.
  • Preserve full messages and voice notes with original and translated versions separate.
  • Discuss your recollection and the source of each disputed account privately with defence counsel; ask how any written chronology should be prepared.
  • Inventory disclosure and list missing files or questions about a translation.
  • Check the court instructions, release restrictions and any Legal Aid certificate wording.

Keep the initial website enquiry brief. Do not upload or send sensitive documents through the form; arrange any document review directly with the firm.

You do not need every item before getting in touch. Mention any approaching court or response date.

Common questions

Can a trafficking allegation exist without payment?

Yes. The statutory definition is broader than a sale for money. Counsel must assess the alleged conduct, substance and other legal requirements; the absence of a payment should not be treated as a complete answer.

Will the lawyer automatically translate my Punjabi messages for court?

No automatic arrangement should be assumed. Explain the context privately and preserve the originals. Counsel can assess whether an evidentiary translation is needed and how it should be arranged.

Can I ask another accused person to clarify a message for me?

Do not contact anyone contrary to release terms or attempt to alter an account. Identify the uncertainty privately for counsel, who can assess how it should be investigated lawfully.

Does a Legal Aid certificate guarantee the firm will take the drug case?

No. Legal Aid Ontario decides eligibility and covered work. The certificate’s scope, the firm’s conflicts and availability, and an agreed retainer must each be confirmed.
