Punjabi consultations and court interpretation

Dildeep Sahi provides consultations in Punjabi, English and Hindi. Tell the firm which language you prefer when arranging the appointment. Speaking Punjabi with your lawyer does not make Punjabi the language of the court proceeding or book a court interpreter.

For an Ontario Court of Justice criminal appearance, contact the courthouse before your court date to request an interpreter, or tell the judge or justice of the peace at the appearance. That court provides interpreters without charge. Confirm arrangements separately from your Punjabi consultation. Documents or evidence in another language may require a separate translation; confirm what is needed before paying for one.

Separate the original conversation from later accounts

Identify who is alleged to have spoken, who heard the words and how you learned what was reported. Distinguish your own recollection from a quotation in a police statement, a forwarded message or something a relative later told you. If no exact quotation has been provided, say so rather than filling it in. Keep the dates, location and available records together. The absence of a recording does not settle whether the allegation can be proved; counsel can assess the actual statements and other evidence.

Read the charge instead of treating every dispute as a threat

The alleged threatened harm matters. Section 264.1 distinguishes threats of death or bodily harm, property damage, and harm to another person’s animal or bird. Identify which is on the papers and whether other charges appear. Not every insulting or angry remark falls within those categories. A threats allegation also differs from a criminal harassment allegation, even when the same people and communications are involved.

Explain the context without assuming a relay answers intent

Discuss the setting, surrounding conversation, tone and who could hear what was said privately with your lawyer. Ask counsel whether and how to prepare any notes. Tell your lawyer whether you dispute the speaker, wording, meaning or account of the exchange. For a death-or-bodily-harm allegation, intending words to intimidate or be taken seriously is a different issue from planning to carry them out. Counsel must assess that question on the evidence. Do not assume that speaking to an intermediary, calling the words a joke or denying plans to act on them automatically resolves the charge.

Use Punjabi to clarify your own account, not rewrite another one

Tell counsel the original language and any particular word or expression you say was misunderstood. If a relative translated the conversation, identify what they personally heard and what they learned later. Keep written summaries distinct from original recordings or messages and your own recollection. You can discuss uncertainty in Punjabi without producing a polished English narrative first. Do not ask another person to change their account or agree on wording with you. Any formal translation or court interpretation is a separate arrangement, not an automatic part of the consultation.

Check current restrictions before seeking an explanation

Read the complete release documents and any related order before calling the person who reported the conversation or sending an apology. A restriction may cover indirect contact through relatives as well as direct messages. An invitation or reply does not lawfully change it. Identify any genuine practical difficulty and the particular term for counsel, while continuing to follow current conditions. Keep written variations with the original papers so advice addresses what applies now.

Prepare for the next event and a separate evidence review

Use the court level, date and attendance method shown on the latest directions. A Brampton connection does not identify every court event, and a consultation booking does not arrange representation at an appearance. If retained, counsel can compare the reported words, language context and available records with disclosure, assess missing information and discuss defence or resolution options. A conviction for threats can involve custody, but the applicable category and circumstances affect consequences. Ask for advice before making decisions from an assumed result.

Agree on the consultation and work from the Mississauga office

Aftermath Law’s office is at 250 Dundas Street West, Suite 402, Mississauga; visits are by appointment. Dildeep Sahi offers consultations in Punjabi, English and Hindi. The free initial discussion addresses your situation, options and potential representation, while detailed statement or recording review and attendance require separately agreed work. State the allegation and next known date in a brief enquiry. The firm accepts criminal Legal Aid Ontario certificates, subject to the authorized scope, conflicts, availability and an agreed retainer; LAO decides eligibility and coverage.

Preparing for the first conversation

  • List the alleged speaker, listeners and how the account was relayed, marking unknown details.
  • Separate any exact quotation from a summary, translation or your later recollection.
  • Identify the precise dispute about wording, context, authorship or intent.
  • Keep complete originals you lawfully hold, current conditions and written variations.
  • Record the next attendance instructions and preferred consultation language; arrange sensitive records directly.

Keep the initial website enquiry brief. Do not upload or send sensitive documents through the form; arrange any document review directly with the firm.

You do not need every item before getting in touch. Mention any approaching court or response date.

Common questions

Can I ask for Punjabi advice when there is no recording?

Yes. Explain what is alleged, what you remember and what records are available or missing. Do not create a replacement recording or ask someone to revise an account. Counsel can discuss the proposed evidence review and its scope.

Must I write the whole conversation in English before contacting the firm?

No English narrative is required to request a Punjabi consultation. Keep the initial enquiry brief and identify the allegation and next date. Arrange detailed instructions and document review directly, preserving original words and any existing translations.

Does saying I never intended to act on the words answer the charge?

Not by itself. For a death-or-bodily-harm allegation, the relevant intent is distinct from a plan to carry out the words. Meaning and the required intent still need assessment in the full context.

Can someone’s private permission let me contact them despite an order?

Private permission does not change a binding term. Read the exact restriction and any written exception and seek advice about a lawful change if needed. Do not use a relative to carry a message that your conditions prohibit.
