Read the exact information request
Keep the full letter or message, its date and reference to the application. List the information or documents requested and any date actually stated. Mark unclear wording for clarification rather than apply a deadline from another matter or assume the request is a decision approving assistance.
Match the requested facts to available records
Keep the application information and records you already have together. Identify what answers each requested point, what is missing and what you cannot confirm. Preserve originals and label any new summary. Do not fill a factual gap with an estimated figure presented as a verified record.
Identify the response work and next criminal event
State whether you need a question explained, records reviewed or help with the actual response. Confirm any task the firm agrees to undertake rather than assume an enquiry sends material to LAO. Keep current charge papers and the next obligation separate; a pending information request does not confirm representation or cancel attendance.
Understand the legal questions before choosing a response
Legal Aid Ontario decides eligibility and the work authorized by a certificate. Aftermath Law accepts criminal law certificates, subject to assessing the matter, conflicts, certificate terms and availability. A certificate, application or duty-counsel conversation does not itself establish that the firm acts for you. Explain the current stage and the particular work requested so representation can be considered.
Preparing for the first conversation
- The complete LAO information request, its application reference and any stated response date.
- Available records matched to the requested points, with missing or uncertain information marked.
- Current charge papers, the next court obligation and the response work you want to discuss.
Keep the initial website enquiry brief. Do not upload or send sensitive documents through the form; arrange any document review directly with the firm.
You do not need every item before getting in touch. Mention any approaching court or response date.
Common questions
Does a request for more information mean assistance is approved?
Do not assume that. Keep the complete request and actual application status available. Legal Aid Ontario decides eligibility and authorized work.
What if I do not have one of the records requested?
Identify the particular record, the gap and any date stated in the request. Ask about clarification or the work needed rather than invent a replacement or assume the requirement has disappeared.
Does a Legal Aid certificate mean the firm already represents me?
No. The certificate terms, matter and conflicts must be considered and the firm must agree to act. Confirm any representation and court attendance expressly.
Is eligibility the same as the certificate covering every task?
No. Legal Aid Ontario decides eligibility and authorized work. Keep the certificate or decision available and identify the specific advice or representation requested.
