Criminal Legal Aid Lawyer in Waterloo
If a criminal case plan for a Waterloo matter includes further review or additional work, ask what the Legal Aid certificate authorizes and what remains unconfirmed. Aftermath Law accepts criminal certificates conditionally. A certificate is not a promise of unlimited work, every expense or firm acceptance; funding and retainer scope should be clear before you rely on them.

Identify the work actually being discussed
List the next event and the proposed tasks, distinguishing agreed preparation from suggestions still under consideration. Keep the certificate and LAO correspondence available. Authorized hours and scope matter; a general description of the case does not establish that every requested task is covered.
Separate legal work from expense questions
If a proposal includes obtaining records or other material, identify the request and any cost information already supplied. Do not assume LAO will pay, that you must pay or that a particular item has been approved. Ask for the funding and responsibility questions to be clarified before making a commitment. This page does not set fees or approve expenditure.
Confirm the firm’s accepted scope and attendance
Ask what Aftermath has agreed to do and who will handle the next appearance. Eligibility, issue coverage, authorized work and a retainer are distinct. The free initial consultation discusses the situation and possible representation; it does not itself authorize additional work or court attendance. Continue to follow current court directions while funding questions are resolved.
Preparing for the first conversation
- Certificate and relevant funding correspondence.
- Next-event directions and work already accepted.
- Proposed additional tasks with unconfirmed parts marked.
- Existing cost information and questions about responsibility.
Keep the initial website enquiry brief. Do not upload or send sensitive documents through the form; arrange any document review directly with the firm.
You do not need every item before getting in touch. Mention any approaching court or response date.
Common questions
Does a certificate mean every task or expense is covered?
No such assumption should be made. Check the particular authorized work and any expense question with LAO and the lawyer.
Does discussing a case plan authorize spending?
No. Confirm scope, funding and responsibility before relying on an approval that has not been given.
Does the initial free consultation accept the whole file?
No. Firm acceptance and retainer arrangements must be confirmed separately.
