Criminal Legal Aid Lawyer in Burlington
If a Burlington criminal court date is approaching while your Legal Aid Ontario application is pending, keep the funding question and attendance obligations on separate tracks. Aftermath Law accepts criminal Legal Aid certificates conditionally. An application, certificate or enquiry alone does not confirm that the firm represents you or will attend the next appearance.

Identify the actual stage of the funding request
Record whether you have applied, received a request for information, obtained a decision or been issued a certificate. Keep LAO correspondence and the matter description available. Eligibility, whether the legal issue is covered, the work authorized and a lawyer’s acceptance are different questions. Do not describe a pending application as approved funding.
Give the court date its own practical plan
Use your current papers to identify the event, court and attendance directions. Tell the firm how soon it is and whether another lawyer is involved. Contacting the firm does not excuse attendance or arrange representation. If funding is undecided, ask about the immediate next step without assuming that a certificate decision will arrive before the event.
Confirm what work has actually been accepted
If a certificate is issued, discuss its scope and whether Aftermath can accept the matter. Confirm who will handle the next appearance and what review or preparation is included. Duty counsel assistance and an ongoing private-lawyer retainer are different arrangements. A free initial consultation discusses possible representation; it does not itself cover the case.
Preparing for the first conversation
- Next court date, event and current attendance directions.
- LAO application status and correspondence.
- Certificate details and authorized matter, if issued.
- Current or previous counsel details and any unconfirmed work.
Keep the initial website enquiry brief. Do not upload or send sensitive documents through the form; arrange any document review directly with the firm.
You do not need every item before getting in touch. Mention any approaching court or response date.
Common questions
Does a pending LAO application postpone court?
No. Follow current court directions unless they are properly changed, and seek timely advice about the coming event.
Will Aftermath automatically accept my certificate?
No. Acceptance depends on the matter, authorized work and the firm’s acceptance and retainer arrangements. Confirm directly.
Is duty counsel the same as hiring Aftermath for the case?
No. Assistance through duty counsel does not by itself establish an ongoing retainer with the firm.
