Describe the assistance already received
Explain the event and what you understand duty counsel did, keeping any available papers or directions. Do not assume that earlier help means Aftermath Law or another particular lawyer is now retained for the rest of the case.
Identify the outstanding task and certificate position
Keep the current charge papers and actual Legal Aid document available. Describe whether you need advice, disclosure review or representation at a specified event. Eligibility and the work authorized by a certificate are separate from the assistance already received.
Confirm responsibility for the next step
Identify the next required event and ask expressly who will handle it if representation is agreed. A certificate, application or enquiry does not automatically arrange attendance. Continue current obligations while funding and the firm’s agreement to act are considered.
Understand the legal questions before choosing a response
Legal Aid Ontario decides eligibility and the work authorized by a certificate. Aftermath Law accepts criminal law certificates, subject to assessing the matter, conflicts, certificate terms and availability. A certificate, application or duty-counsel conversation does not itself establish that the firm acts for you. Explain the current stage and the particular work requested so representation can be considered.
Preparing for the first conversation
- Describe the assistance already received
- Identify the outstanding task and certificate position
- Confirm responsibility for the next step
Keep the initial website enquiry brief. Do not upload or send sensitive documents through the form; arrange any document review directly with the firm.
You do not need every item before getting in touch. Mention any approaching court or response date.
Common questions
Does earlier duty-counsel help mean the same lawyer handles every later step?
Do not assume that. Explain the prior assistance and confirm the actual representation and further work. Duty-counsel contact does not establish a retainer with this firm.
Should I wait for funding clarification before identifying the next court event?
No. Raise the event and current obligations at the outset. A funding question or consultation request does not excuse required attendance.
Does a Legal Aid certificate mean the firm already represents me?
No. The certificate terms, matter and conflicts must be considered and the firm must agree to act. Confirm any representation and court attendance expressly.
Is eligibility the same as the certificate covering every task?
No. Legal Aid Ontario decides eligibility and authorized work. Keep the certificate or decision available and identify the specific advice or representation requested.
