Criminal Legal Aid Lawyer in Etobicoke

Aftermath Law provides criminal Legal Aid advice to Etobicoke clients. An application acknowledgement, decision letter and certificate are different documents. Start by identifying what you actually received and the criminal matter it concerns, rather than describing every document as approval.

Keep the actual Legal Aid document available

Note its date, reference and wording about the matter or work authorized. If you have only an application acknowledgement or a verbal explanation, say that. Do not infer approval, a lawyer assignment or coverage from a reference number alone; Legal Aid Ontario determines eligibility and authorization.

Match the document to the criminal papers

Identify the accused person, charge documents and current stage, including any matter that seems absent from the Legal Aid wording. Do not amend the document yourself or assume a later charge is included. The firm needs the actual terms to consider the work requested.

Define the immediate task and existing help

Explain whether you seek advice, preparation for a particular event or ongoing representation, and who already assists. Keep the next required event visible while funding or representation is discussed. Confirm that the firm has agreed to act and which work is included before relying on attendance or a completed step.

Understand the legal questions before choosing a response

Legal Aid Ontario decides eligibility and the work authorized by a certificate. Aftermath Law accepts criminal law certificates, subject to assessing the matter, conflicts, certificate terms and availability. A certificate, application or duty-counsel conversation does not itself establish that the firm acts for you. Explain the current stage and the particular work requested so representation can be considered.

Preparing for the first conversation

  • Keep the actual Legal Aid document available
  • Match the document to the criminal papers
  • Define the immediate task and existing help

Keep the initial website enquiry brief. Do not upload or send sensitive documents through the form; arrange any document review directly with the firm.

You do not need every item before getting in touch. Mention any approaching court or response date.

Common questions

Is an application reference number proof that a lawyer has been retained?

No. Identify the actual document and decision. Eligibility, authorized work and the firm’s agreement to act are separate questions; a reference number does not establish all three.

What if my charge papers and certificate appear to concern different matters?

Preserve both complete documents and identify the mismatch. Do not assume coverage or change the wording; ask about the authorized work and representation before relying on it.

Does a Legal Aid certificate mean the firm already represents me?

No. The certificate terms, matter and conflicts must be considered and the firm must agree to act. Confirm any representation and court attendance expressly.

Is eligibility the same as the certificate covering every task?

No. Legal Aid Ontario decides eligibility and authorized work. Keep the certificate or decision available and identify the specific advice or representation requested.
